ALL ABOUT SEBASTAPOL GEESE
The Sebastopol is a beautiful and rare breed of domestic goose, descended from the European Graylag. They were also referred to as Danubian geese; a name first used for the breed in Ireland in 1863.
The Sebastopol is a medium-sized goose with long, curly feathers, lacking the rigidity of flight feathers found on other goose breeds. It is readily identified by its long, soft-quilled, curling feathers drape elegantly from its wings, body and tail. Feathers on the breast may be curly (frizzle) or smooth.
The white variety of the Sebastopol is most common. Both males and females have pure white feathers that contrast with their bright blue eyes and orange bills and feet. There are also gray and buff color varieties. Crosses have also produced saddle back variants. Juveniles are mostly yellow with traces of gray.
The gander weighs 12-14 lbs while the goose weighs 10-12 lbs. On average, females produce 30 - 50 eggs per year. Though domesticated breeds of geese generally retain some flight ability, Sebastopols are incapable of flight due to their long frilly feathers.
The Sebastopol Goose is bred primarily for its beauty and gentle temperament. The behavior of the Sebastopol Goose is very affable and amiable, allowing for pleasant human interaction, though causing them to be more susceptible to attack from common predators. This breed is a beautiful high profile goose and an excellent choice for a home flock or personal pet. The special qualities of the best Sebastopol breed lends itself as an excellent show bird and attractive homestead pet.
Sebastopols are hardy birds and are being raised successfully in both cold climates and warm climates. Clean water for swimming and bathing should always be made available and shelter or protection provided during wet, cold, and windy weather. Their loose fitting feathers do not provide as much warmth, nor do they shed water as well as other domestic breeds of geese. Sebastapols can live to 20 years of age when well cared for.

Tips for Raising Healthy Goslings!
When your new goslings arrive home, here are a few tips to common questions to help raise healthy happy birds. Many mishaps are caused by simple errors that can be easily avoided with just a little information and common sense.
The first 2 weeks are the most vulnerable for goslings.
1. Goslings need extra niacin in their diet to prevent mobility issues. Always buy a starter crumble especially made for ducklings and goslings. Chick starter is insufficient in niacin.
2. Too much protein can also cause inability to stand up due to weight gain to growth factor. We recommend not more than 20% protein for goslings. Check your labels carefully.
3. For proper wing development less protein is mandatory. Once wing feathers begin to develop, cut the protein in their diet. Switch to a layer crumble or small pellet (16% - 18% max). Or if you have some starter feed left at that time and want to use up, cut the starter in half with oats. They love oats and also very good for them - crimped and/or rolled are fine. Too much protein can cause drooping twisted wings.
This is not to be confused with Angle Wing syndrome. AW is a hereditary defect condition and can not corrected or avoided. Poor wing development due to too much protein can be remedied.
Also, don't be alarmed if growing goslings appear to pull their wings up often. This is natural behavior because the feather pouch which their wings nest in for adults grows in after the wing feathers start coming in. Once the base grows in to support wings, this behavior will stop.
Remedy: If protein feed is overlooked and wings begin to droop or twist before caught this can be corrected with prompt attention. To correct, immediately cut the protein in their feed to straight oats (usually for a couple weeks). Bind each wing up/closed carefully and then wrap both wings together up high to the natural position. We use medical paper tape for each wing and then position them together with stretchy ace bandages (not cloth type). By the time the bandages wear off the problem is usually corrected. Once wings and normal, regular layer or good all-stock feed can be resumed.
4. Babies can drown! Be careful never to leave your goslings unattended in pools, sinks or even large bowls of water in pens during growing stages or even until fully feathered. They can easily drown with unintentional play from companions or many reasons which can occur. Also, when youngsters join an established gaggle, it is possible for an older adult gander to drown young females that are not fully feathered. We speak from experience and distraught customers who have suffered losses.
5. Goslings can die from over heating especially in warmer climates. Heat lamps may be needed depending on age, number of birds, housing and weather conditions. Northern states will require more heat than southern states for youngsters especially if housed outside. A regular light bulb in a lamp is often sufficient heat in warmer climates or at night. Goslings grow fast and can generate a lot of heat when grouped together. If your goslings are resting away from the lamp it is likely too hot for them or no longer needed. Use common sense and be observant of your goslings to prevent unnecessary death.
6. Chewing on each other's back is common gosling behavior and can become a problem for the victim. Little ones can become overwhelmed and exhausted if picked on too much. Not enough rest or food from harassment can weaken a hatchling quickly. Once a wet spot on a back is started, it is hard to distract the culprit. Whether this bad habit is a dominance issue, from teething, boredom, not enough space or a combination of reasons, we don't know exactly. But there are some things that can be done to help distract babies.
We use a variety of rubber dog toys and small balls - bright colors attract them. Also large/strong rubber bands or bright shoe laces tied high in their enclosure so they hang down where goslings can pull & chew on them occupies them for many hours of play fun.
They do eventually grow out of this behavior but if it continues in older birds we have resorted to nasty tasting meds on the victims back. Their backs can become raw and sore so this provides a solution for both the victim and the culprit. We have had some luck with Iodine or Cut/Heal wound care. Take care the ingredients aren't toxic to taste.
Also providing grass hays, alfalfa & fresh grass gives goslings needed nutrition, fiber & variety to their diet along with needed chewing pleasure. :)
These are a few of the most important recommendations we have found helpful for our customers and their goslings. We will add more tips as they present themselves. Thanks for loving your birds!
